    Synopsis:

    On December 21, 2020 this conversation was sabotaged by the arbitrary arrest of Carlos Manuel in Havana. Óscar presented his part and promised to repeat it when his colleague was freed. Today´s talk corresponds to the cycle of workshops of the Investigative Journalism Award, which include the Chilean-Argentinian Cristian Alarcón and the Mexican Marcela Turati, members of the jury of this first edition.

    Bio:

    Carlos Manuel Álvarez

    Carlos Manuel Álvarez was born in Matanzas (Cuba). He is a journalist, editor and writer. He directs the magazine El Estornudo and his articles have appeared in publications such as El País, The New York Times or The Washington Post. He has published the collection of chronicles La Tribu and the novels Los caídos (Sexto Piso, 2018) and Falsa guerra (Sexto Piso, 2021).

    Óscar Martínez D ́Aubuisson
    (El Salvador, 1983)

    Óscar Martínez D ́Aubuisson is a journalist, editor of special investigations and editor in chief of the digital newspaper El Faro, and the founder of the section Sala Negra, a specialized space that tackles issues of public safety and violence under organized crime, gangs and drug trafficking for the first time in the Central American region. With the project En el camino he shares an extensive and well-documented investigation about the situation of Central American migrants in Mexico. His work has appeared in Gatopardo and El País, among others.

    He has published four books: Los migrantes que no importan, Una historia de violencia, El niño de Hollywood, and Crónicas negras. His work as won significant awards such as the Premio Nacional de Periodismo cultural Fernando Benítez, in Mexico; the Premio Nacional de Derechos Humanos de la Universidad Simeón Cañas, in El Salvador; the María Moors-Cabot Journalism Prize, of Columbia Univeristy; the International Press Freedom Award of the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ); the Premio a la Excelencia Periodística de la Fundación Gabriel García Márquez para el Nuevo Periodismo Iberoamericano (FNPI); the Ortega y Gasset for digital journalism; and the Internacional de Periodismo Rey de España, for the newspaper El Faro. o.
