Synopsis:
As part of the workshop Community Building at the New Alphabet, curated in collaboration with INSTAR and the Haus Kulturen der Welt (HKW), we proposed a discussion about what really constitutes community and its continuity, when social life is predetermined by political ideology, technological surveillance and state education. How can constant care and resistance be a communitary or even collective practice? How do communities achieve alterity and reciprocity while antagonisms are permitted? How can communities defend guaranteed rights despite the reality in which these are systematically violated?
We share this dialogue between Tania Bruguera about art as activism, Chantal Mouffe’s conference about antagonistic public spaces and artistic practices, and Saskia Sassen about cutting through knowledge silos. Finally, Richard Sennet talks about the state and the stage, followed by a discussion between the four about art and politics, moderated by Juliana Rabelo.
