    Synopsis:

    In today's meeting, professors Bálint Magyar and Bálint Madlovics will introduce us to the complexities that characterize democratizing revolutions.


    Bios:

    Balint Magyar:
    He is studying his master's degree in History and Sociology and his doctorate in Political Economy at Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest. Between 1979 and 1990 he was a human rights activist in the anti-communist opposition movement. From its founding in 1988 until 2009 he was one of the leaders of the Hungarian Liberal Party (Alliance of Free Democrats). Between 1988 and 1990 he participated in the architecture of the new democracy and in the negotiation of the peaceful transition as a delegate of the Alliance of Free Democrats. He was a member of the Hungarian Parliament (1990-2010). As Minister of Education (1996-1998; 2002-2006) he initiated and carried out reforms in public and higher education. He was Vice President of the National Development Council (2006-2008) and Secretary of State for Development Policy related to EU funds (2007-2008). Dr. Magyar was a member of the Governing Board of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) (2008-2012).

    Balint Madlovics:
    He completed a BA in Applied Economics from the Corvinus University of Budapest (ECB, 2016) and a BA in Sociology from the Eötvös Loránd University (2021). He has a Master's degree in Political Science from the Central European University (CEU, 2018) and is a researcher at the Budapest Institute for Financial Research (2018-2019). Currently, he is a research assistant at the Democracy Institute of the Central European University, working with Bálint Magyar on the issue of patronalism in post-communist countries.
