    Synopsis:

    The playwright Charles Wrapner, part of the youngest generation of Cuban theater artists, speaks about his work as the director of La Quinta Rueda, and the increasingly common process of emancipation from cultural institutions adopted by contemporary proposals in the field of the performing arts in Cuba.

    Charles Wrapner is an actor, playwright, director of La Quinta Rueda with a graduate degree in Theater Arts from the Universidad de las Artes de Cuba. He holds a masters in Contemporary Art Practices from the Bern University of the Arts, Switzerland.

    His productions with La Quinta Rueda include 8 grados al noreste (2018) by Charles Wrapner, based on real testimonies by Cuban emigrants; La Danza Macabra (2018), version by Charles Wrapner of the original by August Strindberg; La noche de los asesinos (2016), version by Ricardo Sarmiento directed by Charles Wrapner of the work of the same name by José Triana; and “Emily'' (2015), original by Ricardo Sarmiento, directed by Charles Wrapner, about the life and work of the North American poet Emily Dickinson. Additionally, he co-directed the collective work Patria y Vida (2013), his own play Huellas de mis ojos (2012), Yo no tengo la culpa de haber nacido tan sexy (2012) by Abilio Estévez, Los ciegos (2010) version of the original by M. Maeterlincke and Las tres hermanas (2010) version of the original by Antón Chéjov. His group has an extensive resumé of cultural work and research in over 100 communities throughout the island.

    Wrapner has participated in acting, playwrighting, stage direction and theoretical workshops under Eugenio Barba, Julia Varley, Santiago García, Sacha Mariana Salzman, Cristina Castrillo, Patrice Pavis, Jose Luis García Barrientos, Jorge Dubatti, and Mariana Percovich, among other well-known international theater professors.

    He received a playwriting residency granted by the groups 400asa and DigitalBühne in Switzerland. In collaboration with them he premiered the play Lukullus (2018) under the direction of Samuel Schwarz.

    He has been a collaborator and organizer of the 400th anniversary celebration of Shakespeare and Cervantes' birth together with Leo Brouwer and the musicologist Isabel Hernández. He has done similar work with the Festival Teatro de Pequeño Formato, Traspasos Escénicos and the Festival de las Artes of the Universidad de las Artes en Cuba.
