    Caguayrán

  • SYNOPSIS

Tucked away in a corner of a public building in Guantánamo, at the easternmost point of Cuba, one of the three extant fragments of an unusual caguayrán wood sculpture representing Fidel Castro is hidden. At first glance, it seems to have been an imposing work. How did this fragment get here? Why has it been severed and hidden? The caguayrán is a Cuban tree typical of this region, one of many national emblems since it became just another name to refer to Fidel Castro. The tree is known as the indestructible hatchet-breaker because of its “incorruptibility and extraordinary hardness.”
