PM FILM AWARD
In March 2018, in conjunction with Tania Bruguera’s exhibition there, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York presented the film series “Cuban Cinema under Censorship,” sponsored by INSTAR and curated by film critic Dean Luis Reyes. This series revisited more than half a century of institutional censorship in Cuban cinema, which began with P.M. (1961) directed by Orlando Jiménez Leal and Sabá Cabrera Infante. P.M. opened the show, which was followed by Conducta Impropia (Improper Conduct) (1983, Orlando Jiménez Leal and Néstor Almendros), Odd People Out (2004, Manuel Zayas), and Santa & Andrés (2016, Carlos Lechuga). Also featured in this series were Eliécer Jiménez’s Persona (2014), Miguel Coyula’s Nadie (Nobody) (2016), Juan Carlos Cremata’s Crematorio (Crematorium) (2013), Ricardo Figueredo and Anthony Bubaire’s Despertar (Awakening) (2011), and Marcelo Martin’s El tren de la linea norte (The Train on the Northern Railway) (2015). The long-term result of this exhibition has been a fund for the production of audiovisual materials, which has been growing and transforming based on the demands of the filmmakers themselves.
