    Vita Activa is a residency program offered by the Hannah Arendt Institute for Artivism (INSTAR) to promote civic initiatives with viable solutions and sustainable impact in the short or medium terms in Cuba. Vita activa, in the spirit of Hannah Arendt’s philosophy, accompanies projects implemented in the public sphere with a responsible research base. From this willingness to consider the various modes of active engagement, we encourage inhabiting our space and time, which is the very condition of being human.

    Vita Activa Residency Call for Entries

    What projects can apply?

    Any Cuban residing in the country will be able to apply with a project that explores, from collective dynamics, new management models for the social and cultural development of a community.

    We are seeking transdisciplinary artistic projects and projects stemming from any other social practice, that propose novel solutions to urgent problems or shortcomings in contemporary Cuban society. Projects at any stage of conception/implementation will be accepted. Priority will be given to those with potential for continuity beyond the time of residency; a sense of social justice; mutual trust generated by the project in the community and the creativity in the action through which the project is manifested to configure an autonomous reality. What does the residency consist of?

    1. A fund of $3,000 USD (or its equivalent in CUP according to a reasonable exchange rate based on the monetary valuation in the country, upon prior agreement with the winner) for the planning and execution of projects for a period of one year.

    2. In the case of projects in an initial conception phase, a term of up to five months. to carry out the necessary investigative process. After this period, the resulting proposals will be presented to a public and deliberative debate. For in the following seven months the project will be implemented in the proposed community.

    3. A workspace at the INSTAR headquarters in Havana, if required.

    4. Accompaniment and advice for the project in its first year of implementation and development.

    5. The resident will create and update documentation of the entire process (including the accounting) that will be kept in the files of INSTAR.

    6. The results obtained will be presented at INSTAR at the end of the residency year.

    How and when can I apply for the Vita Activa residency?

    The call is open until August 2022. A multinational jury will be comprised of three activists, academics or committed and socially active art specialists. Once the jury has been formally constituted, the names of its members will be announced publicly.

    The applicant's personal information will only be received by the institute's work team.

    The jury will receive the applications through pseudonyms, without access to the applicant’s identity, to guarantee impartiality.

    The results of the deliberations will be announced on September 15, 2022 (no appeals permitted).

    Two residencies will be awarded, starting in August this year. The selected projects will coexist during the residency program.

    What are INSTAR’s principles?

    INSTAR will give priority to inclusive projects that address social issues of interest to the people of Cuba. Projects must offer fair compensation and production conditions, from their budgeting and implementation, to their work teams. INSTAR will protect the personal data of all applicants by not giving access to their information to third parties. It will ensure compliance with its foundational principles of institutional transparency — the Fund’s budgets will be publicly accessible.

    Where do the funds come from to subsidize the Vita Activa residence? Transparency is one of INSTAR's working principles. The institute does not accept donations from institutions or entities that incite violence, discrimination, or that demand ideological ties or compromises their principles. INSTAR's financial information is public, and the names of its donors, income and expenses are viewable on their website. What projects do not qualify for the Vita Activa residency? Projects that:

    1. Identify a social problem, but do not propose a solution.

    2. Reflect an inconsistency between the intentions and capabilities of the creator and the project results.

    3. Lack a sense of reciprocity and generosity, that is, that involves time, effort, and work of the participants without being directly committed to the project or that does not benefit to the same.

    4. Reveal obvious privileges of the creator in relation to the other collaborators involved.

    5. Are limited to impacting only the world of art.
